Whit’s Frozen Custard opened on March 3, 2003, in Granville, Ohio, at the end of one of the region’s coldest and snowiest winters in years. Granville did not know what frozen custard was and many felt it would not survive. There was, however, a destiny to Whit’s beginning and, against all odds, mother nature could not delay Whit’s inevitable success. Chuck Whitman, working in his father’s foodservice business, spent 21 years calling on restaurants, including popular soft-serve businesses throughout the Midwest. During this time, he also purchased an endless array of ice cream ingredients, and worked at a dairy manufacturing plant.
His knowledge and affinity for the virtues of frozen custard grew over those years, and he steadily explored perfecting a frozen custard recipe while sourcing supplies of the finest ingredients. Frozen custard became his passion. His wife, Lisa, also shares this passion. Lisa and her family spent many years operating several ice cream establishments in the Columbus area. “I grew up on soft-serve ice cream, but when I tried frozen custard, that was it. Frozen custard is creamier and full of flavor.” Chuck and Lisa Whitman have taken the secrets they have learned over the years and perfected it into one store.
Chuck and Lisa began franchising Whit’s a few years after opening their original location in Ohio. There are now 30+ stores located in Alabama, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
Whit’s Up Florida?
In May 2014, Michael and Jessica McKinley opened Whit’s Frozen Custard in Atlantic Beach, Florida. With roots in Ohio that brought the McKinley’s back several times a year, Whit’s Frozen Custard was always at the top of the “must-have” list when visiting. Michael and Jessica were thrilled with the opportunity to bring their favorite frozen dessert home to Northeast Florida. Whit’s has expanded in the Jacksonville area to now include locations in Jacksonville Beach, Mandarin, and Avondale. The stores are locally owned and operated.
